Review: Geektastic

Geektastic: Stories from the Nerd Herd – ed. Holly Black and Cecil Castellucci (pub. 08/09)

I had figured this would be one of those things that because of its easy appeal wouldn’t actually be any good.  I tend to be a sucker for high concept stuff that doesn’t deliver, but this was thoroughly enjoyable and had me hooked from the first story.  All aspects of geekdom are lovingly (but sometimes critically) explored by some of the biggest names in YA lit, and it manages not to feel like a gimmic or like a bunch of cool kids ironically claiming geekdom.  There were only two stories I didn’t like, one was written by an author I haven’t liked in the past and one was written by an author I used to like but have grown tired of.  There are a few stories missing, and quite a bit of art missing (done by Bryan Lee O’Malley and Hope Larson) so I will have to take another look at this once it is published.
